Your Monitoring System Has 10,000 Data Points. Great. Which Ones Would Your Operator Look at First?

Modern data centers aren’t short on data. Between building management systems, battery monitoring, environmental sensors, power monitoring, leak detection, UPS systems, and other infrastructure, operators can have access to thousands—or tens of thousands—of individual data points.

That’s an impressive amount of information. But here’s the more important question: Which of those data points actually help your operators do their jobs?

Because having more data and having better visibility aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Collecting Data Is the Easy Part

Today’s monitoring technology can tell us an incredible amount about what’s happening inside a facility. And there are good reasons to collect that information. Historical data can reveal trends, support maintenance decisions, help investigate incidents, and provide a better understanding of how infrastructure performs over time. But simply adding another sensor or connecting another piece of equipment doesn’t automatically make a facility better monitored.

Think about a data center collecting hundreds of temperature readings. On paper, that sounds like excellent coverage. But what if there’s a recurring hot spot in one area that those sensors don’t capture effectively? Another 100 readings elsewhere don’t solve that problem.

The number of data points matters less than whether you’re measuring the right things in the right places.

There’s a Difference Between Data and Visibility

A useful way to think about monitoring information is in three layers:

Data you collect.
Everything your monitoring systems are capable of measuring.

Data you understand.
Information that has meaningful equipment names, accurate locations, appropriate thresholds, historical context, and clearly defined priorities.

Data you can act on.
The information that helps an operator recognize a developing problem and decide what needs to happen next.

The goal isn’t necessarily to reduce the first category. There’s value in having detailed information available. The goal is to make sure the second and third don’t get lost inside it. An operator shouldn’t need to understand 10,000 data points to know which five deserve attention right now.

Look at What Your Operators Actually Use

One of the best ways to evaluate a monitoring system may be to stop looking at the system for a moment—and look at the people using it.

  • What dashboards do they open first?
  • What information do they repeatedly search for?
  • Are there readings they routinely ignore?
  • Are they still walking to equipment to verify something the monitoring system should be able to tell them?
  • Do they keep their own spreadsheets, notes, diagrams, or workarounds because information is difficult to find in the system?

Those behaviors can reveal something that a point count can’t: where useful information may still be missing or difficult to access.

The same applies after an incident. Instead of only asking, “Did the monitoring system detect it?” consider asking: “What information would have helped us understand it sooner?” That answer may be far more valuable than simply adding more monitoring.

Facilities Change. Monitoring Should Too.

A monitoring strategy that made perfect sense when a facility was commissioned may not make as much sense several years later. Equipment gets replaced. Loads shift. Rooms are reconfigured. New systems are installed. Operating procedures change. New team members arrive. Meanwhile, monitoring configurations can remain largely untouched. That’s why periodically reviewing a monitoring system shouldn’t only be about checking whether sensors and alarms still work.

It’s also an opportunity to ask whether you’re still monitoring what matters.

  • Where have new blind spots appeared?
  • Which information is no longer useful?
  • What are operators repeatedly trying to understand?
  • Does the information being collected reflect how the facility operates today?

Better Monitoring Isn’t Necessarily More Monitoring

It’s easy to measure a monitoring system by numbers. How many sensors? How many devices? How many points? How many alarms? But those numbers don’t necessarily tell you how useful the system is at 2:00 AM when something starts behaving differently. The better measure may be much simpler: Can the person responsible for the facility quickly find the information they need to understand what’s happening?

Sometimes improving monitoring means adding another sensor. Sometimes it means changing a threshold, improving a label, adding location information, reorganizing a dashboard, or connecting information that already exists in separate systems. And sometimes it means realizing that you’re collecting plenty of data already.

You just need to make the right data easier to see.

10,000 data points can tell you a lot. Good visibility tells your operator where to look first.
